PCS History /
Portland Chinese School was founded in 1975 by a group of families from Taiwan. They organized the school to share their enthusiasm for Chinese heritage and culture. The school first met in a church basement located at Clay and Park in downtown Portland. Originally, there were 20 to 30 students and the Overseas Community Affairs Council Republic of China (Taiwan) provided educational materials and financial support. Their support was based on the number of students enrolled. Because of the efforts of parents Zheng Liangcai, Wang Hongbin, Gan Yichang, and Zhang Jinglin, and teacher Hong Zidian and many others, the school gradually took shape year by year. In 1988, the school applied for non-profit status and in 2000 the school was officially registered as an alternative private school (ORS336. 635, OAR581-021-0072). Later, in 2007 the school was authorized by the College Board to offer AP Chinese classes.
